The Madonna Collection by SquareHue
I Bought This May 8, 2013 | Beauty Boxes, Misc., Nails, Reviews
Okay, before you get all worked up about the whole Madonna thing like I did, I need to tell you that the “Madonna” in “The Madonna Collection” is not our beloved Queen of Pop. As much as I would like to see a nail polish named “Like a Prayer,” which would obviously be robin’s egg blue like the background of the album cover of the same name, that’s not what this collection is about. Instead, The Madonna Collection, which is SquareHue’s May offering, celebrates Mother’s Day by naming it in honor of the mother of all mothers.
Inside the box is a trio of pink polishes. The names of the polishes this month form a nice little acrostic that says, “Happy Mother’s Day.”
First up is a light pink crème, named “Happy Crème.” If I had named this polish, I would have called it “Pink Bismuth” because it’s exactly the same color as Pepto Bismal, and a bit on the streaky side. As I was putting it on I actually hated it a little, but by the time I finished the second coat I thought it was okay. Just okay. The finish was still a little streaky, so I applied a third coat. It was mostly opaque at that point. In spite of the amount of polish it took to get full coverage, this polish did dry reasonably fast. It’s not my favorite of the bunch, but it is a classic, flat pink, which is a color I surprisingly didn’t already have.
The next color is called Mother’s Pearl. This one is a bright pink with a pearl finish, and easily my favorite of the three. If this collection had been THE Madonna Collection instead of The Madonna Collection, this color would definitely be named “Material Girl.” I got full, opaque, coverage in two easy coats.
Last up, we have “Day Glow.” This is a florescent fuchsia that will be fantastic for pedicures in the summer. Its formula is nearly a crème formula, but doesn’t have the streaking issue that Happy Crème had. If Day Glow was a Madonna jam, it would be “Hung Up.” I got opaque, streak-free coverage with two coats.
Overall, I think SquareHue played it a little too safe with The Madonna Collection, though I’m assuming it’s because this box was meant to be gifted to subscribers’ mothers. It’s also the second pink box I’ve received from SquareHue, the first one being the much more exciting Vintage Love Collection in February. That said, I’ll probably get a lot of wear out of Mother’s Pearl and Day Glow.
SquareHue is a monthly nail polish subscription service. For $21 a month, you get three bottle of limited edition high-quality polish delivered to your door. Next month’s collection is The SoBe Collection, which I believe will be Miami inspired! You can sign up for SquareHue on their website.
Skin & Tonics Rating:
Performance: 3/5 – Two out of the three colors are glorious colors that go on easy and dry quickly. One of them was streaky, even after three coats.
Quality: 3/5 – Very nice quality for the most part, but again, “Happy Crème” could use some work.
Value: 4/5 – $21 for 3 polishes comes out to $7 a bottle – about what’d expect to pay for a China Glaze or an OPI. The quality is on par with both of those brands.
Overall: 3.4/5
